Flat Tyre on the M4
Having a tyre blow-out or sudden puncture on the M4 is obviously a very dangerous situation. The first indication you may get that you have a flat tyre while driving on the M4 is a loud noise followed by vibration through the steering wheel.
It’s natural to panic, but you have to try and stay calm and in control of the vehicle as you lower the speed, turn on the hazard lights and indicate to the left to bring the car to a stop on the hard shoulder.
If you are near a services area or exit slip road and the puncture is not too severe you should try to leave the motorway and drive slowly with hazards lights on to find a safer place to stop.
If you are forced to stop on the M4 hard shoulder with a flat tyre, get everyone out of the car and follow the rules of the Highway Code as far as keeping safe and contacting the authorities is concerned. Under no circumstances should you try to change a tyre yourself while on the M4, even on the hard shoulder, that’s if you have a spare tyre, which most newer vehicles do not.
